Class Streaming

Like it or not, the day has come when my boy is going to be separated from some of his buddies in class as his school practises class streaming based on year-end academic performance.  Throughout the year, he has made bunch of friends, friends who would help him empty the class dustbins when he runs out of time doing it on his duty day, friends who would keep a copy of the teaching materials for him when he is absent from his Hanyupinyin class, friends who would keep his books for him when school time is almost over and he's busy with his teacher's assigned tasks and the list goes on.  He assured me that's  fine with him as he gets to make new friends.  I know he's going to miss his buddies as he always tells me that he's indeed lucky to have friendly classmates.

I am a parent who dislike this kind of streaming process in young learners because I don't want my kid (or rather the mother in that matter) to be pressured when it comes to academic learning at this stage.  Though I agree that they will eventually be subject to peers' pressure when they join the competitive world out there one day but why the hurry? But then, take it or leave it.. *sighs*

Today is report card day and my boy has been reminding me to come during recess time (parent-teacher meeting starts right after recess) so that I can be with him at the canteen. :)

In fact Ian is lucky to have friends whom are very friendly and helpful. My April came back crying today, telling me that her friends didn't want to be "friend" with her anymore. Sigh... I also don't know what to do. Do you have idea how to console a crying kid like April?

Last year when they streamed the kids, my girl lost all of her classmates accept 2 others. :P So she had to start making friends all over again.

It's good to stream...can teach the better students more...and no need to spend most of the precious lesson time trying to discipline the naughty ones.

Of course, psychologists claim it is no good for the weaker students - actually, they like it too - can learn at their own level and pace...and can learn something. In a class of good/excellent students, they'll be totally lost and left far behind.

I don't agree with streaming and I believe the kids should all be treated the same. in fact the weaker ones should be given more attention to improve and not the other way round. Then again, I've chosen to send her to chinese school and she'll be subjected to streaming.. sigh !

You have to look from another angle, streaming is good for slower developed children so that the teachers in the class can keep pace with them.

For smarter kids, the teacher can bring them to a higher level of learning.

Hrm... I agree with class streaming, when I was a student it motivated me to study harder since all the classmates were competiting with each other!:p

In real life, none of our friend can stay with us forever... we have to adapt ourselves to new environment from time to time!:)

Don't worries, cheer up and enjoy your weekend!
p/s: Your boy is very strong and tough, I reckon he won't have any problem to adapt!

Yan: Guess every kid has to go thru this phase: I fren you, I don't fren you. My boy gets upset too when his friends tell him "I don't fren you". I always tell him each of us are different. Some friendly like him, some not so. We have to respect that. Then ask yourself one question. Find out if you have done something bad to them that made them say those words. Apologise sincerely if he did. If the answer is no, then why bothers. He kind of picked it up and has grown thicker skin by the day. Hahaha..

MG: He told me only two of his friends, a boy and a girl are with him next year. But then he says nevermind, can make new frens. Guess the mom is over concerned.

stp: Ya, good and bad.

smallkucing: Must learn to look at the bright side. :)

slavemom: It applies the same to the boys but my boy is thick skin. Hahaha

Elaine: Yup, good and bad but good that the classes other than the elite ones are grouped randomly and not by academic performance.

Michelle: Ya, I am ready for more hair pulling moments. Aiyaya..

Alice: Can imagine the tough competition among the classmates starting very soon.
